Daily passenger train and bus service link Portland and Boston, and the Portland International Jetport provides service to major US cities and Canada.

The greater Portland region extends from Scarborough in the west to Westbrook in the north and Falmouth, Cumberland, and Freeport to the east. Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean extend southwest to northeast along our shores, and have played an important role in our economic development. Easily accessible by car, plane and train, greater Portland is two hours from Boston by car or rail. The Portland International Jetport, located in nearby South Portland offers daily flights to many popular US cities, coast to coast.

Portland, the state’s largest city, was established by the British in 1632, as a fishing and trading outpost. When Maine became the nation’s 23rd state in 1820, statewide population was estimated to be 300,000 people spread out over 236 towns, including Portland, which was the first capital. In 1832, state government moved to more centrally located Augusta, where it remains today.

Today greater Portland has more than 245,000 residents. Our economy continues to attract new businesses while helping existing companies to grow and prosper. Maine and the greater Portland region is a safe, healthy place to live and raise a family.
